Gallaudet
Gallaudet University is the nation’s leading institution of higher learning for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Kent Anders Architects’ proposal, Active Edge, conveys Gallaudet’s identity and shelters its core by creating an active space that is embraced by the community it serve
Siteplan
Gallaudet's campus is celebrated as a unique space where American Sign Language unites the community as a common first language. It is located in Washington DC.
Campus Model
To build this Active Edge, DeafSpace principles- which focus on exterior conditions that are comfortable to the hearing impaired- and thorough observation of the campus will be used to create support for the population and give
it a favored vantage point over its surroundings.
Front View
On one edge of the campus, the Exemplar Building announces Gallaudet to the neighborhood and identifies the campus as a green oasis. The Tapscott Plaza Gateway anchors the other edge. Serpentine Benches that extend from the gate
provide an ideal meeting place – a place where deaf and hearing can interact and come to appreciate their different sensory worlds. More than most Universities, Gallaudet is represented by its people: Tapscott Plaza is the
visitor’s first direct contact with the Gallaudet community.
A feeling of openness and warmth is extended from inside to out by wood and glass serving a functional need for visual access while also conveying sensory comfort.
